Amsterdam Light Festival 2018-2019
The sixth annual Amsterdam Light Festival takes place from 29 November 2018 to 20 January 2019. This year, the festival features a number of special surprises.
During the festival, Amsterdam’s city centre will be illuminated by more than 30 artworks and installations by both local and international artists, designers and architects.
The 53-day exhibition revolves around the theme ‘The Medium is the Message’, the famous statement by the Canadian scientist Marshall McLuhan. The role of light in conveying a message and the city of Amsterdam as a medium for telling stories are central to this edition.
Amsterdam Light Festival is a fun winter event for all ages. During 53 of the darkest days of winter, Amsterdam’s historic city centre will be the picturesque décor for the amazing illuminated artworks in this popular light and water festival.
The Water Colors boat route takes in all artworks installed in and along the canals and the Amstel river. This is a cultural festival that is known to delight all visitors and literally puts our city’s beauty in the spotlights.
The festival’s Water Colors boat route is available from 29 November 2018 to 20 January 2019. To fully appreciate the festival and its artworks, we recommend booking a professional tour guide who will make your festival cruise even more memorable. The guide provides information about the boat route and each of the illuminated artworks along the way, as well as the artists who created them.
